The McDonald’s Story
McDonald’s traces back to 1954, when milkshake-machine salesman Ray Kroc came across a small, remarkably efficient hamburger stand run by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California. Their “Speedee Service System” impressed him enough to pursue franchising the concept nationally.
Kroc opened the first franchised McDonald’s in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955. Growth was fast — over 200 locations existed within five years — built on Kroc’s insistence on consistent quality alongside speed.
By 1961, Kroc had bought out the McDonald brothers’ stake for $2.7 million, taking full ownership and clearing the way for global expansion. His approach to real estate and franchising went on to shape the modern fast-food business model. Today, McDonald’s operates more than 36,000 restaurants across over 100 countries.
